My carrot juice - my special treat - and I like to go to Parliament at lunchtime:

We stare up at the Peace Tower in awe:

And then we take a seat and enjoy the eternal flame. Yesterday we chose to sit on Saskatchewan, that joined confederation in 1905, bringing with it its wheat (and Joni Mitch3ll, although she was actually born in Albert@ and later :))

The other day we made a fabulous discovery. Girl mounties!!!

The Prime Minister was likely in here:

But we don't like to think about him. We don't approve of his...hairdo.

We like instead to get close up to the tower of peace.

And walk around to the Parliamentary library.

Once, early in my career, when I was young and very naive, a diplomat from Mexico who had moved here permanently to raise his daughter said to me, "It's such a civilized country." It's interesting to think about the exact convergence of historical forces that was required to produce this.

I like the view of the national gallery and a pretty church, over the river:

We can also see the new U.S. embassy that the U.S. started building in the late 1990s. It's not a very nice embassy, as it looks like a bunker (in contrast to its traditional embassy opposite Parliament, that was decommissioned when the new one was finished). Most embassies in Ottawa are in old Victorian houses and have minimal security; the U.S. embassy is obviously a different case. I feel sorry for Americans that they live in a sense of perpetual threat, even in a provincial town like this.
